ChewChat was an IRC network ran by Chew. It consisted of two servers, one owned by Chew, and the other by her friend, Cah.

Channels

ChewChat hosted a number of communities and channels, mostly pertaining to Chew and her projects.

There were 4 official designations of channels, all of which listed on the website.[1]

Network Official Channels

ChewChat owned and operated several channels. These were deemed "official" as they were both created, endorsed, and in a sense owned by the network, and not any individual user. Most of these channels pertained specifically to the network, but some were simply operated solely by network admins.

Each channel had its own page on the ChewChat website, which documented its purpose, rules, and staff. Some listed their founder, bots, and recommend age rating.

The channels denoted as "Network Official" were as follows:

  • #lobby - The "main hub of the network." All users joined this channel upon joining the network.[2]
  • #suggestions - The channel used for network-related suggestions.[3]
  • #help - The channel used for network-related issues or help.[4]
  • #bots - The channel used to discuss verified or official network bots. Official bots were half-opped while verified bots were given voice.[5]
  • #website - The channel for discussions related to the, now defunct, website.[6]
  • #lgbt - The official channel for "LGBT Pride" related discussions.[7]

NetAdmin Approved

Several channels were given an "official" status by a network admin. These channels were not necessarily network related, nor owned or operated by a NetAdmin, they simply received approval or certification from a Network Admin.

The channels denoted as "NetAdmin Approved" were as follows:

  • #Cah - The channel created and operated by NetAdmin Cah.[8]
  • #Chew - The channel created and operated by NetAdmin Chew.[9]
  • #anarchy - A channel dedicated to "spamming" or general bot testing. Users could add their own bots. Despite the title, the channel did not have any rules, but still inherited the network-wide rules.[10]

Official Bot Channels

As ChewChat was home to many bots, some opted to have a channel dedicated to them. All bots were allowed to have a spot here, if requested.

User Owned Channels

The final designation of channels. Any channels here are simply channels users have decided to add via PR to the GitHub repository.

The channels denoted as "User Owned" were as follows:

  • #minecraft - A channel dedicated to occasionally talking about minecraft, this channel was not used very much.[11]
  • #soarn.pro - A channel run by Soarn.

Network Staff

The staff team of ChewChat was small, only consisting of 4 known people.[12]

Most staff were added prior to the page's creation on September 16th, 2017. However, mueslivines was added on October 25th, 2017.

History

ChewChat was started due to Chew's break from Discord in early 2017. The earliest known message was May 16th, 2017, where initial channels were made. However, it wouldn't be until June 15th, 2017, where it would see its first user. However, shortly after Chew's return, ChewChat slowly began losing members before its eventual shutdown.

However, ChewChat may be seeing a revival, as the domain was purchased again on June 13th, 2023. No announcement or indication of the server being up has occurred yet, though.
